Tybee Island Light

The history of the lighthouse on Tybee Island goes back before the US Revolutionary War. Nearby Savannah, Georgia was founded in 1733 and ships sailing up the Savannah River would pass by Tybee Island, whose wooden lighthouse was first built in 1736.

Unfortunately, just a few years later a strong storm destroyed this lighthouse. A new one constructed of both stone and wood rose from the Georgia shore in 1742.

A taller brick lighthouse standing 100 feet was completed in 1773. In 1886 a brick and cast iron construction was used to build the lighthouse that today stands 154 ft tall.

The lighthouse is open to the public and is operated by the Tybee Island Historical Society.
