Cockspur Island Light
The Cockspur Island Lighthouse was built in the 1830s. At the time, no lights were installed as the purpose of the tower was merely to serve as a daymarker entrance to the Savannah River's south channel, which leads from the Atlantic Ocean to Historic Savannah approximately 17 miles inland. Lights were installed in 1848.
Eventually shipping traffic began using the much deeper north channel of the Savannah River and this lighthouse ceased to operate in 1909.
Nearby Fort Pulaski was the scene of a major battle during the American Civil War.
